Saxon Sceatta

GBP 43,55 (EUR 63,21), 13-feb-05, ebay, bancroft333

This one was part of the "Continental sceatta series" probably Frisian, but in circulation widely throughout England, and it was here it was found. This is a variant of Spink no. 839, series D with Crude Radiate Bust (shown below).
The reverse shows a large, clear central cross, with four pellets around. The border has a pattern of crosses, Vs, rings and other shapes, perhaps denoting an inscription? These patterns occur on both sides, and may be an attempt at conveying a message, or just an imitative style copying Roman and other early coins with legends round the outside, but just showing a pattern rather than intelligible words. Dark-toned silver 11.5 mm in diameter, weight 1.09 grams
