Finland was a part of Sweden from the 12th century until 1809, Finland was then a Russian grand duchy until, following the Russian Revolution, the Finns declared independence on December 6, 1917. Followed by a brutal Civil War (1918) between Red and White, and establishment as a republic, then facing existential threats from the Soviet Union in World War II (Winter War, Continuation War), and ultimately forging a post-war identity of neutrality and resilience, with significant internal development in land reform and democracy
