Local Spanish Civil War banknotes: Created by municipalities, cooperatives, unions and other organizations due to the scarcity of fiduciary currency in small purchases and exchanges during the Spanish Civil War.
Bilbao was tijdens de Spaanse Burgeroorlog (1936-1937) een cruciaal republikeins bolwerk en de hoofdstad van het autonome Baskenland
. De stad was strategisch belangrijk vanwege de industrie en ijzererts. Na hevige bombardementen en het doorbreken van de 'IJzeren Gordel' (defensielinie) viel de stad op 19 juni 1937 in handen van Franco's nationalisten
